Adequate breakdown cover could prove to be vital this week as motorists have been urged to drive carefully in the icy conditions.

Police closed off a 25-mile long stretch of the A1 northbound on Monday after several vehicles were involved in accidents on the North Yorkshire motorway.

A spokesman said: "Traffic conditions on the A1 northbound from Dishforth and all the way to Leeming and beyond are treacherous.

"There have been a serious of accidents which have resulted in the A1 northbound being shut while emergency services clear the scene."

The spokesman added that jack-knifed lorries were involved in the collisions as well as vehicles which had tried to evade the scene of the accidents. No-one is believed to have been injured.

Nine severe weather alerts are currently in place across the UK and the Met Office said ice and snow could cause problems on roads and pavements in England and some parts of south east Wales on Monday.
