Reducing the CO2 emissions of your van

Cutting CO2 emissions in vans is set to become a big issue. Here’s a rundown of the changes that could be in store.

Most drivers know about the Government’s green laws and initiatives put in place to improve car emissions and the environmental impact of motor vehicles. But did you know that the European Commission (EC) is to propose new vehicle emission standards for vans and light trucks that could affect UK drivers?

Capping emissions

Proposed EC legislation would cap average CO2 emissions for vans and light trucks at 175g/km by 2013. Proposals for similar legislation for trucks and buses are expected to follow in the future.

The plans are along the lines of the vehicle emissions standards that were applied to cars last year, following years of delays.

So far, vans and light vehicles have been excluded from the emissions caps for cars that were agreed last year and set a level of 130g/km by 2015.

Higher taxes for CO2 emissions

One way in which emissions’ standards for vans may affect drivers is through road taxes for vans taking a similar route to that for cars – with different rates being applied, depending upon emissions.

Van prices may also increase to compensate for the changes that manufacturers’ make to their vehicles – by more than £5,000 according to one motoring lobby group.

However, as with cars, experts argue that fuel efficiency savings for green vans, can go some way to helping make up for that additional cost.

Are emission targets achievable?

Auto industry lobby groups have criticised the Commission’s plans, saying the proposed emissions target is unreachable in the timeframe suggested.

Average emissions for light trucks and vans currently stand at about 200g/km.

The van manufacturing market has also been affected by the economic downturn, and may be unwilling to pay the extra cost to alter vehicles.

However, while you’re waiting for the industry to make its decision on emissions, do make sure you’ve covered all eventualities with van insurance from Direct Line. Get an online quote today.
