Van insurance - Tips

Take too little care with the packaging, and you could ruin the item you need to deliver. Follow this fragile-item checklist to be on the safe side

When delivering glass, ceramic and other fragile items in your van, it’s crucial to prepare them properly. From wrapping the item to sealing the box, there are some important steps to making sure your item gets from A to B in tact.

The right container
Make sure the item is in a strong container, such as a double-layered cardboard box. Use bubble wrap and cushioning such as polystyrene chips to add further protection.

The container should be the right size for the item, and ensure that fragile items don’t touch each other or the edge of the container inside the packaging.

Labelling
If there is a possibility other people will handle the package before it reaches its destination, use a ‘Fragile’ sticker on the box and mark which way up it should be kept.

Security
Inside the van, it is important to secure the container safely so that it doesn’t slide around while you are driving. Avoid using string to secure it as this can cut into the cardboard, so use good packaging tape instead.

Expert tip
“The aim is no movement,” according to Courier website Boxby.co.uk “either inside any packaging, or the package in the van. Use ratchet straps to secure the item securely to the sides of the van, and use blankets to pad between the van panels and your item, and to fill any gaps between your fragile item and anything else in the van.”

Cautious driving
While the item may be securely fixed inside the van, it is still important to drive with added care. Watch out for potholes in the road and allow plenty of room between you and vehicles in front in order to avoid the need for sharp breaking.

Lift with care
If the item is too heavy or awkward to lift on your own, get some help. Attempting to lift heavy items could lead to damaged goods – and a damaged back!

Essential insurance
Whilst a Direct Line comprehensive van insurance policy will provide cover for certain fragile items that belong to you, it will not cover any items being carried in connection with any trade or business. So to insure any such item you will need to take out specific business insurance – business insurance quotes are available on the Direct Line for Business website.
